About

Bank of Biafra five shilling note belonging to Dr. P.C.O. Chinwuba.

The front of the note has the words “Republic of Biafra” and “Bank of Biafra” written on it. A palm tree stands prominently in the center and the denomination “Five Shillings” is printed in bold with a promise-to-pay statement signed by the Governor of the bank, Sylvester U. Ugoh, and the Director, William Okefie Uzoaga. On the reverse side is an image of four Biafran women in traditional attire.

Historical Notes

The Bank of Biafra was established as the central bank of the secessionist Biafran state in 1967 under Decree No. 3. Initially located in Enugu, the bank had to relocate several times due to the Nigerian Civil War. The bank issued the Biafran pound, which went into circulation on the 28th of January 1968. Initially, only five shilling and one pound notes were printed while additional denominations were introduced later.
